| Mekong Delta, the Rice Capital of Vietnam |
One of the two main rice bowls of the entire country, this area is comprised of low-lying rice paddies and rivers bordered by mangrove and palm trees. The Mekong River is made of nine "tails", or branches, which braid together into a network of canals and channels.
|
Exploring the area by boat, at leisure, a visitor can partake of the river lifestyle. Farmers and fishermen live on the edges of the rivers and canals, in structures made from whatever can be found. Cages constructed from bamboo often house fish under the homes.
Many activities take place along the river banks, with colorful floating markets enlivening the scene every morning at canal intersections. Photographers will keep busy! Cruising along the rivers on the roof of a boat laden with fish produce as the sun sets over coconut trees is an unforgettable experience.
